Managing Kidney Disease

In most cases, Kidney Disease or Kidney Failure is caused by other factors, such as Diabetes or high blood pressure. Usually, the most agressive treatment is to control the Diabetes and/or high blood pressure through diet, exercise and medication. Some antibiotics and pain killers also have negative effects on the kidney.

If your physician suspects kidney problems, he/she will look for obstructions in the urinary tract, many times caused by kidney stones which are treated, broken up, and removed by a procedure called lithotrypsy. This is a non-surgical procedure in which sound waves are directed at the stone(s) to break them up and allow them to flow out of the urinary tract.

You should avoid dehydration (drink plenty of water like your mother said!), quit smoking, and eat proteins in moderation. The kidneys need plenty of fluid to assist in filtering your blood and doing their job.

See your local Urologist for further advice if you suspect that you have kidney problems.
