Managing Diabetes in Retirement

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases prevelant today. More and more Americans are developing the disease as a result of our lifestyle. The increasing consumption of fast foods that are high in fat and carbohydrates, coupled with our reduced amount of physical activity, has overloaded our body's ability to produce insulin.

Diabetes is a blood disease in which the blood suger level is out of balance and, left untreated, will normally progress into circulatory problems with the legs and feet, blindness, and other severe body malfunctions and even death.

Fortunately, Diabetes can usually be managed with medications, diet and exercise. In fact, my physician told me that, if I had to be diagnosed with a chronic disease, diabetes would be his preference since it can be controlled and treated.

Controlling Diabetes Progression

By following your doctor's orders, controlling your intake of carbohydrates, and regularly exercising your large muscles, you can limit the progression of Diabetes. If you fail to do this, the disease will normally progress and, as you get older, the ravages of the disease will be irreversible.

Take Diabetes very seriously, regularly monitor your blood sugar level, and take your medication as directed. You can enjoy your retirement lifestyle for years and years to come!
